Introduction
There is some overlap here with what was covered in Year 2 in this curriculum. Establish if the first few skills were covered as you may want to jump to lesson 3.

2.Copy, Paste, Format and Edit Text ( Year 2/3 Lesson)
Year 3 can develop desktop publishing skills by using the important copy, paste, format and edit text in a word document.
Open up the Word document below and discuss the different tasks and where and when we would need these skills. Save the document to a shared area where the pupils can open it, work through the tasks and save it as their own file name.

3.Combining Text and Images
Teacher Input
Look back at a number of different posters, newsletters and publications that have images and text on the same page. You could even look at websites for newspapers and discuss the different features, such as different sizes of text, image placement etc. Go over the feature of Microsoft Publisher* (better than Word for combining text and images) such as adding Wordart for a title, copying and pasting an image from the internet and resize it then adding text boxes on different part of the screen to add and format text.
Pupil Activities
The pupils could create a page on a number of different topics linked with other parts of the curriculum. Ideas include e-safety/PHSE posters, tourist guides for Geography, newspaper for Literacy.
* If you do not have Publisher then Word will work but the images will have to be text wrapped (right click on image) for them to moved around. Pages on the Mac or iPad achieves similar results.

Developing Comic Creation Skills
Comic Life 3 allows Key Stage 2 pupils to develop the skills they began in Lego Comic Builder and add their own images, choose from a variety of templates and use effects. Adding images from the Computer (from web or taken with camera) creates lots of opportunities to use Comic Life across the curriculum.

iPad
Both Comic Life and Book Creator apps allow comics to be created. Plus Book Creator is ideal for pupils to make ebooks combining text, images, video and audio.
