E-safety (Years 1 and 2)

Introduction
Below are a series of videos and resources to help teach e-safety to Years 1 and 2 – there are also key questions in bullet points. We suggest covering videos 1-3 with Year 1 and finishing with the Lee and Kim video, then starting with Lee and Kim for Year 2 and moving onto videos 4-6. We have created a pupil activity pack with the videos and questions below for pupils/parents to access at home or school.
The resources are also mapped to the Education for a Connected World (2020) framework using this interactive page.

Pupil Activity Code: ET3W – What is it?

1. Understand what the internet is and how people use it (5-10 mins)

Ask the pupils what they think the internet is and get responses, then watch the video ‘What is the Internet?’ and ask the pupils:
– How do you use the internet at home and school?

1. Understand what personal information is and why we keep personal information private. (10 mins)

Discuss with pupils the term personal information and ask them to come up with some examples; full name, address, phone number, email address, bank details etc.
Watch Hector’s World Episode 1 and discuss the important messages; people online are not always who they say they are and use a nickname instead of full names.

  • What is personal information? Can you give some examples.
  • What could you use online instead of your real name?

2. Why do websites want personal information? (15 mins)

Watch Hector’s World Episode 2 and discuss why websites want personal information? Most of the time to use the website better but sometimes so they can sell personal information to other companies. Discuss how once your personal information is online, you lose control of it.

As shown in the video, when putting information on websites, we never know who will see our personal information.

  • Why do people want personal information?
  • Who may see our personal information if we post it online?
3. Identify where to go for help and support when concerned. (25 mins)

Watch Hector’s World Episode 4 and pause the video at around 3 minutes 23 seconds and ask your class what could Tama do when she feels worried or concerned and what could the pupils do if they see or find something online that worries them?

  • What could Tama do when she feels worried or concerned?
  • What could you do if you see something online that upsets or worries you?

The Lee and Kim videos cover aspects of the 3 videos above. Ask your pupils why Kim gets butterflies in her tummy?

Jessie and Friends Episode 1 also covers this with a ‘funny in your tummy’ song and that watching videos online cannot always be suitable.

  • Why does Kim get butterflies in her tummy?
  • Why should we be polite online?
  • Who should we talk to online?
  • What should we do if someone we do not know talks to us online?
4. What to do if something upsets us online (10 minutes)
Jessie and Friends Episode 1 covers watching inappropriate videos and what to do if you see a video (or anything online) that upsets you (tell an adult we trust).
  • What should we do if we see a video online that makes us sad or scares us?

5. What are the dangers of sharing photos online? (10 minutes)

Jessie and Friends Episode 2 covers how photos can be taken and then sharing them online means you may not be able to control who will see them. It reiterates the message that children should only talk to people they know when sending messages and things online.

  • What does ‘sharing online’ mean?
  • Who could see a photo we post online?
  • Who should we send photos or videos to online?
6. People are not always who they say they are when online and keep personal information private. (10-15 mins)
Jessie and Friends Episode 3 picks up on the message from Lee and Kim above by reiterating the message that people are not always who they say they are when playing online games and that it is ok to say no.
  • What should we do if someone wants to be our friend online?

7. Can we trust everything we find on the internet?

Penguin Pig is an eBook or book that is about a young girl who finds some unusual information online and believes that it could be true. This leads to an adventure that challenges pupils’ beliefs that what they read online is always correct.

8. Why is it important to be responsible on the internet?
Chicken Clicking is the story of a chick who sneaks into a farm to use the Internet and soon gets caught in the trappings of online shopping and profiles. It is described as Little Red Riding Hood for the iPad generation and is available in hardback, paperback and Kindle on Amazon. It is also available on the iBook Store.

You can also watch video from the Safer Internet Centre.

9. Why is it important to respect people?
The ‘Troll Stinks’ book introduces younger pupils to cyberbullying and respecting people online.
