Introduction
There are many benefits to making eBooks in education. Ebook creation allows teachers and pupils to use a range of different content/tools (text, audio, drawings, video etc) and communicate this in a singular document. This means that ebooks can be created about any subject and teachers can create resources for a range of different pupil needs. Pupils can also create ebooks to share their learning in many different ways, giving them the confidence to communicate their knowledge. This pack also helps pupils (and teachers) create content using accessibility features.

eBook creation can knit together many aspects of the Computing curriculum. On its own it would fit into the Key Stage 1 objective to “use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content” and the similar Key Stage 2 objective to “create content to accomplish goals.”

Prior Learning
If pupils are new to Book Creator then you may want to try the Year 4 Ebook Creation Activity Pack first. That pack also includes an introduction video explaining the advantages of ebooks over traditional paper books.

🛠 What will teachers and pupils need?
This activity pack uses Book Creatorwhich works online on any device (there is also an app but the web-version is better for assessing pupil ebooks). Teachers can create an account, then make a library for pupils books. Pupils can join the library by being invited by the teacher. Pupil can use either Google, Microsoft or other accounts to join but if pupils do not have email addresses then can use a QR Code.
There is information about this here but we have also made a video showing how to setup a library and pupils logins below.

✅ Assessment

The assessment grid below includes outcomes from each of the activities in the pupil activity packs to match pupils against.

Pupil Activity Pack (Teacher view)
The pupil activities and videos below are the same as the Ebook Creation Pupil Activity Pack  (following pupil activity code at the top of this page). They guide pupils through creating an interactive quiz so pupils will need a topic to think of questions about.  You may find it useful to watch the tutorials for each part of the activity as a class before pupils try them individually.

1. Front Cover with background colour, text and an image.
Start your book in Book Creator and choose a page shape and colour.
Portrait books are better for stories and Landscape books are better information books but there is no rule.

Rule! You cannot change the shape of your book once it is started.

2. Question page
Watch the video to learn how to add a new page and add a multiple choice question with images. It also demonstrates how to add audio (if you have a microphone on your device) and audio descriptions to help people who may be visually impaired.

Tip: Hide the audio icon

Hide the audio icon so that the reader could click or tap an image to hear a description of it. Select the audio icon, the i then turn on ‘Invisible when reading.’

3. Answer pages
Watch the video to learn how to add different answer pages for correct and incorrect answers. If needed, you can also add audio next to the text too.

4. Hyperlinks
Watch the video to learn how to add hyperlinks between your pages to create the interaction, copy pages and then continue your quiz by adding more pages.

Extension task – make an interactive story ebook
Watch the video to see an example of an interactive story book where the reader chooses the storyline. The ebook was made using many of the skills covered above. Could you make a similar book?
