🛠 What do pupils and teachers need?

The pupil activity pack introduces pupils to the importance of a computer operating system. For the introduction activity pupils will need to watch the video overview and then complete the missing words on the sheet to show their understanding. For the rest of the activities, pupils will need access to either Windows 10, Chrome OS on Chromebook or an iPad with iPadOS 15 or above and the Word document (Plus Microsoft Word on Windows/Pages app on iPad/Google Docs on Chromebook to edit the document) to add their screenshots for each skill. For task 1, pupils using iPads will need access to the Files app. If possible, pupils could complete the skills for multiple operating systems if available to them.

👨‍🏫 Teacher Input and differentiation
The introduction video below is 5 minutes long and covers the 3 main uses of an operating system (opening and closing apps, organising files and changing settings) across Windows 10, ChromeOS and iPadOS. You may want to watch the video together with the class and pause it after each point to discuss. Pupils can then watch the same video in the pupil activity pack (pupil activity code above) and complete the missing words on the sheet to show their understanding of the video. Encourage the pupils to watch the video more than once to find answers. For children who are struggling, then you could give pupils the key times in the video for certain answers (see times below).

✅ Assessment
Pupils can complete the sheet for the introduction activity on a print out of it or in Word, Pages or Google Docs. For task 1, downloading the task sheet and renaming it is the task. For tasks 2-4, pupils will demonstrate their skills by adding a screenshot of each tool into the document (this is demonstrated in task 2 below).

What is an Operating System?

Watch this video to learn why computer operating systems are so important when we use computers. Then add the missing words to sentences on the document below. You may want to watch the video a few times and pause it to help find the information.

Teacher answers for activity sheet below and helpful times
An operating system is piece of software that helps us control a computer and is often known as the OS. (12 seconds)

It can help us open, close and switch between applications. (45 seconds)

We can also use an operating system to organise folders and files, renaming them and moving them to different places. (3 mins 15 seconds)

If we want to change the brightness of the screen or the volume of the computer speakers, we can use the settings in the operating system. (3 minutes 40 second)

An operating system also helps people with different needs use a computer, this is called accessibility. (3 minutes 55 seconds)

Task 3: Picture in Picture
Picture in Picture allows us to watch a video while doing other tasks on a computer (multi-tasking). For example, we could watch a video in this pack while trying the tools. Watch the video below to learn how to use Picture in Picture (the video covers iPad, ChromeOS and Windows) and then take a screenshot of it to put in the Picture in Picture section of the document.

Task 4: Split Screen
Split Screen allows us to use two applications side by side on the screen, meaning we can multi-task. Watch the video below for the operating system you are using, to learn how to use split screen. Then take a screenshot of split screen on your computer and add it to the document.
