⏱ 1 Hour +

Introduction
This activity pack challenges pupils to search a spreadsheet to find the culprit of different crimes. They will use filters and conditional formatting to remove culprits until only one is left. Use the video above to introduce pupils to filters and conditional formatting before watching the video tutorial for the respective software below. It is a good idea to watch videos together first and discuss skills with your class. Pupils can then access the resources and videos independently using the pupil activity pack (code above)
Due to the different versions of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), it is a good idea to show pupils the help menu, to help locate tools.

Prior Learning
If possible, pupils will need a knowledge of spreadsheet software, covered in our Year 4 and Year 5 Data Handling Packs.

Differentiation
Less able readers may need help finding the clues, these could be sign posted. More able pupils, if they finish the first set of case files, could go onto these 4 more case files, which are a little longer with more clues to find. Also, more able pupils could create their own suspects spreadsheet with the same headings and about 50 suspects, then write their own case files. They will need to make each suspect unique and also write crimes that are not violent.

🛠 What will pupils need?
Microsoft Excel, Numbers (iPad) or Google Sheets.
A print out of the
Case File PDF
The Suspects Spreadsheet for Excel. (You could share this with pupils how you normally share files with pupils or the videos below and in the pupil activity pack demonstrate how pupils can save the spreadsheet and open it into Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.)

✅ Assessment
Pupils can write the culprits for each crime onto the print out of the case files.
Case file answers:

Activity – Search a spreadsheet to solve the cases
