2. Re-create or design familiar 3D models using cubes, such as tables and chairs.
3. Use chisel tool to improve and adapt models.
4. Colour individual blocks or whole models.
📝 National Curriculum Content
Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals.
⏱ 3-5 hours
Introduction
Computer Aided Design is a key skill, both in terms of Computing but also helps with understanding of spatial awareness. This activity pack develops skills introduced in Year 1 Design and are developed further in Year 4 3D Design Activity.
🛠 What will teachers and pupils need?
Pupils will need access to the 3D puzzle website and for activity 1 and the 3D Slash website for the other activities (all free and online).
👨🏫 Teacher Input
Discuss the advantages of designed 3D objects on a computer with your pupils – accuracy, access to many tools, being able to move the viewpoint (360 degrees). You may want to watch the video tutorials from the pupil below before pupils attempt the skills.
🚦 Differentiation
Pupils can be extended by attempting the different projects at the bottom of the the pupil activity pack (below) using the skills they have acquired. Pupils who need more support may find it better to start with the 3D activity in the Year 1 Design activity.
✅ Assessment
3D Slash website requires a login to save models but as soon as pupils start creating their own model, the website creates a unique web-link which pupils can copy and paste into a pieces of software to save, such as Microsoft Word. This is covered for teachers and pupils in the pupil activity pack below. Important- the project on the link can only be edited once so teachers/pupils can only revisit the link after closing your project to view it.

What will you learn?
1. Understand and use 3D space on a grid.
2. Re-create or design familiar 3D models using cubes, such as tables and chairs.
3. Use chisel tool to improve and adapt models.
4. Colour individual blocks or whole models.
What will you need?
You will need access to the 3D puzzle website for activity 1, Don’t Flood the Fidgets for activity 2 and the 3D Slash website for the other activities.
1. Understanding 3D Space
Watch the video tutorial to learn about 3D design and how to use this website and try to create the same 3D designs that are in the bottom right, in your bigger 3D plan.
Design an iPhone
Watch the video tutorial to learn how to design your own iPhone in 3D. Then try yourself using this website.
2. Using the different tools of 3D slash and build a 3D table.
Watch the video to learn how to start a 3D design in 3D Slash, rotate around and zoom into the grid then create 3D table.
3. Using the chisel
Watch the video tutorial to learn about using the chisel to remove individual blocks of different sizes or rows/columns to improve your design.
4. Extend your 3D model
Watch the video to see how your table can be extended into a chair using different sized blocks for the back of the chair.
5. Colours
There are different tools to add colours but the main ones are :
6. Develop your project
Once you have a good understanding of the tools and you have designed a piece of furniture. You can then begin re-creating different furniture of sizes and styles.
7. Saving
A login is required to save your designs but when you are working on a project, the website creates a unique web-address (URL) just for you – meaning you do not need a login. You can copy and paste (right click on it or tap on it on an iPad) that link into another document such as Microsoft Word.
Important- the project on the link can only be edited once so you can only revisit the link after closing your project to view it.
